Casualigraphy - July 2nd

Modern calligraphy for the millennial generation.

Jesse Saler, artist and entrepreneur of Casualigraphy, sells modern calligraphy goods and services.  She loves perfect lettering, and has been practicing since she first got hold of a crayon.  Her first calligraphy set was gifted to her at age 9, and the rest of her interest in typography and lettering is history!  When Jesse has her hands on  pens, she is also an activist, creating work to literally get the “word” out.

Casualigraphy will be at The Somerville Flea on Sunday July 2nd, and will be returning July 23rd, August 20th, and September 17th.

Fresh Prints - July 23, Aug 6

Now, this is a story all about how Katherine’s life got turned upside down…

Have you been introduced to the Fresh Prints?  Get it - get it?  A 90s hip-hop hand-lettered print and gift shop has got you reflecting on the wisdom of hip-hop lyrics all the time.  Katherine, the entrepreneur behind Fresh Prints, wanted to try calligraphy, but then realized that she wasn’t the greatest at it.  So she turned the attention to the quirky lyrics she showcases and proudly applied her handwriting to this wisdom.  “Don’t be a hard rock when you really are a gem.” How can you argue with Lauryn Hill?  Come find your inspiration to get up in the morning this weekend, July 6th, at Katherine’s booth!

La Roux Vintage - July 30

When it’s dreary outside, you can still be in style.

Looking for vintage home decor and accessories, maybe even an antique umbrella?  Look no further than The Somerville Flea Market!  One of our long time vendors, La Roux Vintage, will be gracing us with her presence this Sunday.  Erika Hapke began La Roux in 2008 and has been vending at the Flea for three years.  A rare book dealer by day, Erike is an avid treasure hunter by night (and weekends).  She’s always excited to find pieces sell with a story.  She is equally gleeful when she finds the perfect match for a customer - like the vintage umbrella that she sold to a bride for her wedding day.

I Want a Pony- August 6th

“I want it, I want a pony!” an inspirational line for all vendors - vendors want to hear people screaming from the top of their lungs that someone wants their stuff!  Case in point, Carla named her refurbished furniture company I Want a Pony five years ago.  She has been hauling her treasures from Providence, RI to sell at the Somerville Flea ever since we began.  I Want a Pony’s furniture centric products has expanded to home decor items, such as cabinet door hooks for the wall.  They also added handmade children’s clothing and vintage games once Carla’s daughter entered their lives.  How does Carla get her “misfit” dressers and desks to be the exact item she imagines them to be?  She makes her own furniture paint - why not?!

Come and find the perfect piece to brighten your home any Sunday at I Want a Pony!

Red Thread Tarot- August 13

Perhaps it is in the cards...

Have questions about your life that you would like to delve deeper into in a new way?  Kristina of Red Thread Tarot is our very first tarot reader at the Somerville Flea Market.  She began reading tarot cards over ten years ago when her friend gave her a deck of tarot cards because she is apparently that kind of lady!  When asked what her favorite part of the business and reading the cards she reflects: “I always feel honored with the things querents are willing to share with me.  My goal is to make sure people walk away feeling positive and affirmed.”  Kristina makes querents (that’s you guys!) feel comfortable during readings.  Get your cards read this weekend and on August 27th at The Somerville Flea.

Jam Sessions - August 20th

What’s your jam?

Jam Sessions, by Afton, is bringing New England fruit, small-batch jam to the Somerville Flea Market.  Afton has been making jam since she was a teenager living in Maine.  While pursuing music and education careers, she created homemade jams on the side, and in 2014 opened Jam Sessions - a great tie of her passions within the name.  Jam Sessions has great partnerships with other local businesses, and also is a fan at selling jams at the Somerville Flea.  Afton works full time at America’s Test Kitchen and is basically their jam connoisseur.  If you’re getting a hankering to make jam, you can even take a workshop with Jam Sessions! Grab your new favorite Jam this Sunday.

Hasting Studios - September 24

Imagination at work.

All the way from Whitinsville, Massachusetts (south of Worcester) favorite illustration prints vendors, Irene and Jonas Hastings, bring their work to The Somerville Flea!  Hastings Studios is made up of both artists’ illustrations; though different in style, the illustrations have similar motifs, many being of the animal kingdom, even if a mermaid sneaks in there as well.  The detailed artwork is available as both originals and stationery.  The Hastings met at The Kansas City Art Institute in Missouri, and being a creative couple, they have incorporated not just new illustrations to their business along the way, but also handmade journals, coloring books, and calendars as well.  Irene started the business in 2012, and then Jonas’s work was added last summer.  We are happy to have them back this summer for their second Flea season!  Come visit Hastings Studios this Sunday and again in October on the 1st, 15th, and 22nd.

Urban Kitchen Handmade - October 1

Are you smelling good enough today?

Have you ever been in a position where you’d like to buy something that does not exist, so you just decide to go ahead, pick up a new hobby, and create it yourself?  That’s how Helene got into the soap and body product making business - with the desire to make natural products for her own skin.  She took a course on soapmaking and thus, created Urban Kitchen Handmade once her friends’ and family’s orders got too big.  The Urban Kitchen Handmade products contain sustainable ingredients, including sustainable palm oil, coconut oil, and olive oil along with the fabulous essential oils!  Helene loves to share that her lavender comes from Cape Cod, and also does a lot to support local suppliers.  Urban Kitchen Handmade has a studio in Allston; 10 years of creating soaps, candles, and eye pillows needed to be relocated from the original urban kitchen!

Grab a bar of soap and get fragrant Sunday, October 1st and 8th from Urban Kitchen Handmade!

Rutabaga Bodega - October 8

Get all five servings of fruits and veggies, starting with Rutabaga Ginsberg.

Did we have you at Rutabaga Ginsberg?  Or is your hero instead Broccoli Obama?  That’s right, you can now get a healthy dose of politics and pop culture with your vegetables over at Rutabaga Bodega’s booth on Sundays!  Cheryl of Rutabaga Bodega draws “punny vegetable celebrity characters” to create wearables for fans of all ages.  These shirts are pigmented using the juice from the featured vegetable - yes, you can wear your vegetables without dropping them on your clothing.  Cheryl began her business venture a couple of years ago after fooling around with these drawings for a few years.  When asked how she got her idea she says, “I am a vegetable farmer so I spend a lot of time out in the field with vegetables, thinking about vegetables. A few years ago the farm crew and I got really into coming up with veggie celebrity puns and I started drawing them for fun for our farm's weekly CSA News Zine. It blossomed from there, if you know what I mean.”

Come out and grab your favorite celeb’s spirit veggie this Sunday!
